Now see, IMHO this looks bad.  Sometimes the ‘big plan’ just doesn’t fit in smaller places.  In this case a pair of GMD1’s sits idle in Melville SK all decked out in the striped scheme that would, unfortunately, soon be removed from larger power though out the system.  On those bigger engines the scheme was a world beater but corporate insecurities originating in the US and the view of “the bottom line’ rendered this wonderful design obsolete.

Something else to notice are the smoke stacks.  Those unique barrels are missing.  Probably another cost cutting measure, as it was easier to rebuild without them than to create new ones.  Funny though, the dry grass is growing as close to the tracks today as it was back in 1959 when these ladies came off the assembly line all decked out with spark arrestors.   The rerailer stands out nicely in this photo.  As a G scale guy I had to scratch build my own rerailer of course.  Lots of odd angles and shapes to recreate there.

Just a brief list for those few who don’t know…..
